Private Instruction

The best way to learn to play an instrument or to improve your golf swing is through private lessons with a knowledgeable instructor. Woodworking is no different.

With the exception of full time programs at recognized schools, the most effective and efficient way to develop and improve your woodworking skills is with private instruction. Group classes (and I also teach group classes at some schools) can be the right choice as long as you understand the pros and cons.

  • On the plus side

    • Group classes create a nice social environment where you meet and interact with other woodworkers.

    • They may be a lower cost alternative to private instruction.

    • They may be offered at a location that is more convenient to you.

    • You and others will learn from each others successes and challenges.

  • However they are not right for everybody or in every situation

    • A group class is going to typically move at the right speed for one person in the class. For everybody else it is either too fast and you are challenged to keep up, or too slow, and you are bored.

    • The curriculum. is generally fixed and rigid and may not take into account skills you already have.

    • The tools provided to use and learn with have seen better days and can be frustrating to work with.

    • The timing og th classes may not fit in with your schedule.

    • Feedback to students is too general and doesn’t address your questions or concerns.

    • You may feel intimidated by others in the class who “seem” to know more or make you feel less welcome.

I offer private instruction in my well equipped workshop in Rollinsford, NH and can also visit and teach at your location if the situation warrants.

I teach general hand tool skills and machine skills, as well as specialized subject matter such as veneering and inlay work. We work together to develop a class and curriculum that meets your needs. When possible, we will incorporate a project into the teaching as that will make the process even more effective.

Instruction is billed on an hourly basis with materials for projects an additional cost.
The current rate is $75.00 per hour with a 10% discount if you purchase a block of 10 hours.
